Next: a panel discussion with Hannah Rudman, Sarah Fisher from the Arts Council North West, Kay Wells from Oldham Coliseum and Chris Gribble from Writers’ Centre Norwich.
Q: Has technology enabled the changes?
A: No, the process has been about looking at the organisation and changing from them. Looking first at business models and how technology can be incorporated.
There is still a sense of it being new but we are talking about platforms that have been around for a while.
It’s about learning from people you engage with, a cultural change.
Kay mentions that it was about learning about people fears.
Have now found out that fear shouldn’t hold you back from trying out technology. Nothing will go horribly wrong. (more…)

Next on: Sarah Fisher (Arts Council England – North West), Dawn Giles (Arts Council England – East)
Dawn from the Arts Council emphasises that the journey that arts organisations have taken on AmbITion is one that the Arts Council will be learning from going forward.
Arts Council staff will also be receiving training to upskill and work with the clients.
Her giveaway: continue learning.
Sarah adds that a few of the organisations in the sector were already very skilled in digital. However there were those that weren’t.
AmbITion isn’t about process. It’s about narratives, how the sector changes. If we can create interesting narratives and soundbites then the sector can change.
There are a lot of zealots out there. Like Bill Thompson! They exist because it’s a new way of communicating. Those narratives are there because it’s a great way to engage the sector.
We’d love you all to turn into Bill Thompson so you all have conversations about using digital to change your practice.
It’s all about you organisations leading the thinking about how you changed.

Seated at the Electra Cinema within the Tyneside Cinema, a historic building that is the UK’s finest surviving newsreel cinema.
Just listened to basic housekeeping by Dave Moutrey of Cornerhousewho is chairing proceedings. Now hearing about the architectural firm who have provided an interesting RFID visual projection which projects on a screen above the venue’s bar the locations of all attendees who are wearing lanyards with an RFID chip implanted.
Alison Clark-Jenkins, Director, Arts & Development, from the Arts Council now talking about the Arts Council’s Digital Opportunity.
Four (?) key strands to the Arts Council’s plans:
1. Research, learning and policy
2. Building digital capacity – skills and development, network and partnerships, technology and infrastructure, innovation and artistic practice. “Programme is really about creating innovative art that really engages with people. 85% own mobile phone, 1 in 4 never switch it off.”
AmbITion is a change programme for the arts and cultural sector – helping organisations achieve their 21st century sustainability ambitions through implementing integrated IT and digital developments.
